Honest Review of Dr Shabnam Das Kar

Good Evening!

As most of you would know if you had read my previous post I have many health issues since I was born. I have been suffering my whole life and have been pretty bad at social relationships, education and at workplace. I have food allergies, food sensitivities, hormonal imbalance, eczema, body acne, bad breath arising out of it, adrenal fatigue etc. These mean that I cannot eat 60-70% food that you normal people can eat.

What is Functional Medicine ?
Functional Medicine is exactly opposite of conventional medicine. It studies the root cause of many chronic diseases, which is the gut, such as diabetes Type 2, cancer, etc unlike conventional medicine. That is pretty good if you ask me. In Functional Medicine food, organic food, is used as a medicine rather than medicines itself which has zillions of known and unknown side-effects. All these disease and many more can be easily improved by improving one's gut (stomach, small intestine and large intestine).

To address my issues, I went to a Functional Medicine doctor in Mumbai, India. That doctor claims to be the only functional medicine doctor in India. Things that happened during the appointment that were alarming my suspicion and cynicism of her.

1) She seemed more interested in selling Amway Supplements. She could be an Amway saleswoman easily. She did recommend a lot of supplements and that too from Amway touting Amway has the best quality of all the supplement making companies in the world. *DING DING DING DING*. A doctor an amway saleswoman also ? Yes, She is an amway sales woman. The entire world knows about that the company as a Scamway.

2) She recommended I buy her webinar that she is giving away for a very attractive special price to me at 1500/- which she normally sells at Lakhs of rupees. * DING DING DING *. In my kind of health issues which is Gut Dysbiosis, eating a nutrient dense food is of paramount importance. I knew that from very reliable sources. When she (the doctor) was making a recommendation of 5 supplements, I asked her if whole foods are enough to provide the nutrition we need, to which she replied "whole foods do not provide enough nutrition. That is why you have to BUY my webinar". What about the huge money I am already paying you for 30 mins "as consultation" ?

3) Since my coming onto earth I have been skeptical of doctors. She, like many others in my life history based on the appointment with her, seemed more interested in making money out of suffering and poor patients than actually curing them.

4) She would counter my questions with her question, for example, when i would ask "why do I have  poor sleep at night", she would ask to me "why do you think that is so ?" and I would end up giving my thoughts on it and she would reply as "ok". After all that I still didn't have any answer to any of my questions including "Why do I have poor sleep".

5) There is a big mania going on in the health community about the "Paleo Diet"; which is a diet consisting of nuts and seeds, vegetables, meat and fish, avoiding grains, beans and legumes. Some people also say Paleo diet is same as LCHF(Low carb, High Fat) diet, although I don't believe that now, she seemed to believe Paleo is LCHF. Anyways, I was already eating LCHF and told her that I feel very uncomfortable on LCHF diet, any patient would be expecting an answer to their problems and questions; but no, not with Dr Shabnam Das Kar, she told me to read two books to get my own answers. That sounded a small alarm in my head. The alarm became louder and louder when I came home.

6) I sensed a general disdain for India in the meeting with her. She had this aura and expression that communicated non-verbally to me when she said that "she is from Canada and is not from here(India)" said in a tone and manner that says she is as if above all of us 125 crore Indians. She was very quick to say "Mera Hindi itna achcha nahi hai", said in a such a proper tone and proper stress that nobody would believe her she is not from India. During the meeting she would ask questions on lifestyle and when I would answer something, she would be quick to interrupt me with "yeah, ye India hai, yahan pe aisa hi hota hai" with a sad voice or as "this happens only in India". She did mention more often than not that she was not from India repeatedly.

This has been my experience with the doctor, and your experience may vary.

Bottom Line: Many and most doctors are unethical and immoral. They are so immoral that they like to rob the patients of all their life saving before giving them a chance at defending themselves. That being said there ARE many doctors are who can give you good results. Just be-ware on how to identify a phony one. These good doctors are far and few in between but added up totally they are quite many that you wont miss all the ones who you feel are CHARLATANS. Trust me, there are quite a lot of these in the health and medical industry

  1. you are welcome, I guess.
Remember that the situation is similar through out mumbai or as far as I have seen or you could let me know better, There is another self proclaimed "healing" "functional" medicine "doctor" called Dr Lily Kiswani, I went to her too, but it was more or less similar experience. So much smack and no substance. I will write a blog post on her too. She was so not worth 18,000 Rs any small amount of internet reading would have saved you your 18000 Rs and 4 hours of quacking from her.

What is their approach ? Functional is a term thrown around a lot and I wasted money on two doctors in Mumbai . I want to know their approach such as tests they do, diets they recommend, diagnosis they have expertise in.

Granted these are new names for me. But I have seen and know about many doctors, all across India and most of them are pure quacks.

I wish you a google health too.

  7. the second name out of the three came up when I was searching for functional doctors in mumbai in Feb 2017 and it came up along with Shabnam Kar who was in mumbai. So I went to her, but once I saw her, she felt like such a terrible joke in the name of functional medicine. She wanted to take me off of my natural diet and replace that with supplements. So I got a taste of functional medicine in India from her and thought how better could the other ones be too. Then I looked up even more and got Lily Kiswani, she was a just a tad bit better like 0.005% better than Shabnam Kar but was not worth 18000/- I paid her. They all have one thing in common, they propagate other people's work, they have no work of their own. They are not the first one to research, they are the ones to copy somebody else's research as their own work.

  8. Let me know whats your health issue and what they diagnosed it and how they diagnosed it. Unless India has those functional labs all these functional doctors added up together amount to a squat.

  9. akkiboy , I am also planning to consult Functional medicine Dr. for IBS. i am also suffering severe food sensitivity. Besides, I am also diagnosed to AS. For how many months, you took her treatment?

    1. Which doctor are you going to consult. We need functional labs or advanced methods of testing equipment. The existing labs are not equipped to test according to the latest researches and science. Myslef and my family also has AS. from shabnam das kar, I didnt go back again after initial consult because she had dismissed the diet component in a silly manner. Then I dismissed her in a similarly silly manner. Plus the doc seemed like an amway sales women which I come across at every nook and corner. Like she said "How can you do a Paleo diet in India ?!". So yeah, do a paleo diet. Paleo diet itself calms down many health issues even autoimmune ones. Paleo diet removes many food intolerances/sensitivities/allergens. If you still have those issues, go on an AutoImmune Version of Paleo called A.I.P. Best of Luck. Only you know your body better than all hundered doctors combined.

    3. There are various kinds of gastroentterologist but I have found World gastroentereoly Institute to be somewhat, just a slightly, tad bit, better than others because one kind of infection called S.I.B.O is tested over there.

    4. Akkiboy, in India, I think there r only 2 Functional Medicine Dr. Dr. Kar & Dr. Kalpana Gupta Shekhawat. Dr. Kar don't advise tests. Dr. Kalpana advise tests & she told cost of these tests may be R40k-50k! What u think about cost of tests??

      Delete
    5. Its not true that Shabnam Kar does not advice tets, to me she adviced CBC, F.B.S, P.P.B.S, F. Insulin, HbA1C, Fibrinogen, HsCRP, Homocysteine, Serrum Ferritin, T1BC, Serum Iron, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Serum Protiens, SGOT, SGPT, GGPT, Uric Acid, Creatinine, Lipid Profile, ANA Profile, E2, PTH, TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Anti TPO, Anti TG, urine albumin/creatinine ratio, urine RE, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12. These are common which "ANY" doctors advice not just functional med doctors.

Functional Medicine tests I have seen functional medicine doctors of USA do are G.I. Stool Test to test the gut infections. Organix acid test to check for nutrient deficiencies and detox pathways. 900 SIBO Breath test, DUTCH Adrenal test to test adrenal fatigue type, Mercury test , Kryptopyrrole test, Cyrex Food Sensitivity Test, Wheat Zoomer Leaky Gut Test, 23 and Me Genetic Testing. etc.

As you can see these tests are directly testing the issues of gut, adrenals, genetics, food sensitivities etc. What are you going to get out of lipid profiles and Uric acid and creatinine test. These tests have value but do not directly focus on the issues at hand.

    6. Krisna have u consulted Dr Kalpana?

      Delete
    7. @mit gupta , I've inquired her in email regarding my health issue but not consulted her personally. Her treatment cost is very expensive:
      1. R1000 for consultation.
      2. R3000 for prescription.
      3. R40,000 - R50,000 for lab tests!
She further clarified that blood tests can also be done at your location but for two tests i've to come at her clinic as these 2 tests are not available in other places. She is right coz when i inquired some reputed labs at my location none of them have facility for those 2 tests. These 2 tests are "OLIGOSCAN"-R5000 & "ANGIOSCAN"-R4000.

Good thing is that she is beautiful (as seen in her website and fb). so u will definitely get some relief after consulting her face-to-face LOL

      Delete
    8. Oligoscan is used to test minerals and toxic elements in your blood. Angioscan's purpose is not clear sounds like very rudimentary testing it does.
What other tests Kalpana Shekhawat gets done for 50K ?

      Delete
    9. akkiboy , She didn't mention name of other tests as those can also be done at any other reputed labs. Actually, she meant to say for first consultation u need to visit her personally and follow-ups can be done online. Does Dr. Shabnam Das Kar suggested u to do Oligoscan & Angioscan?

      Delete
    10. No. I mentioned all tests Shabnam Car suggested. Those same tests were suggested by my general physician when I had a cold 20 years ago.

      Delete
    11. You can ask Kalpana all tests she would suggest before the consult. Many doctors abroad and in India agree to give you test suggestions before the actual consult, that way you both have test results to discuss on. Thats one way to save money on doctors as the first consult is used only to give you lab tests names.

My criteria for evaluation isto look through the lens of Functional Medicine as is practiced and taught in the U.S.A. All the information about Functional Medicine on the internet, it appeals to the common sense.

I am on the A.I.P. since 1.5 years. Some issues have resolved while other issues have come up. Like skin issues have 80% calmed down, but other issues such as extreme fatigue, low energy, joint pain etc have come up. If you are in Mumbai, might be collaborate on the availability of A.I.P. foods as its a challenge to source these foods in India and in Mumbai.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think they ask for ADVANCE FULL PAYMENT because once a patient is done with the discussion / talking of the symptoms , which is what is done in the first meeting, they might ask "hat the hell have you done worth 3000?". To avoid that conflict after the meeting, they take advance full payment.
They don't give you all the solutions at once, they will spoon feed the solutions to you, if they have any to begin with. Their solutions include, taking a multivitamin supplement, take probiotics and take magnesium supplement if you are too desperate, all MUST be bought from AMWAY and that too from her only. The other doctor Lily Kiswani, who I saw after Shabnam, was same.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Mindful eating is essential because eating while being in a stressed state hinders digestion and a indigestion is what causes various problems like auto immunity, depression, anxiety, food sensitivity, food intolerance. You are as healthy as your digestive system.
Mindful meditation helps you go and keep you into a para sympathetic state, a state of reset and digestion, a state in which digestion is maximized, this is the state in which humans need to be in 24x7x365 unless some unavoidable stressor occurs.
    Cheers

    1. I used to think I needed a functional medicine practitioner too. Since starting to work with Justin Marchegiani via Skype, I am starting to realize that functional medicine is a big marketing gimmik. "Functional" is a common term used to describe the "function"ing of the various digestive organs. Any good Gastro doctor , such as a World Gastro Institute I know currently, can check for all dysfunctions of any digestive organs.

    1. I have been reading about functional medicine and has been to multiple FM doctors and read dozens of books from these multiple FM doctors. So I gladly say I know enough about FM to make this comment. FM medicine tries to fix the underlying issue, which 99% of the times happens to be the gut, not even the digestive system which includes liver, kidneys, pancreas, only the stomach, small intestine and large intestine and the infections lying these areas. Functional medicine is not a replacement for conventional medicine ie a gastroenterologist.

Its ok you found good experience with your FM doctor. It would have been far more prudent if you had mentioned which doctor and the details of your diseases and details of how you were treated.

Try doing a search on pubmed.gov instead, its a better source of scientific medical information than what you have mentioned.

Nobody took steroids or immune suppressants in their journey to healing as naturally as possible. Thats a given. We are discussing the red flags and stupid practises run by functional medicine doctors in the name of "functional medicine". Dont get too caught up on the name, its represnts a media hype. See what it represents and how it is different from the historical practices of healing.

PS: Behave yourself with your comments here, this is a final warning and you would be banned and your comments deleted forever. Nobody has the time to reply to immature comments.

      Paleo
      Paleo + Low Fodmap
      AIP
      AIP + Low Fodmap
AIP + Low Fodmap + SCD

9% of the remaining people get better with doing the antimicrobials and probiotics protocol mentioned in the book.
This blog is not dedicated to you or not meant for you. It is for the people who are still looking for the solution. There are LITERALLY MILLIONS of good doctors available in and around India.

This blog specifically shares experience with Shabnam Kar more than 2 years ago. Again, people may need her or any gupta or any doctor but first they must correct the diet. second they must do the antimicrobial herbs and probiotics. Last 1% of the people still a doctor. Gastroenterologists do a colonoscopy to rule out colitis, crohns and celiacs, to diagnose someone with an IBS.
There is no test for zonulin protiens in the blood stream to detect a leaky gut. Usually any kind of food allergies is enough to conclusively say that a person has a leaky gut.

yes, low fodmap foods reduce the symptoms but its not a cure. Fodmap food are very food for the gut bacteria if the gut bacteria in the colon is very good.
So eventually what I have come to understand in my 3 years of trying to improve food allergies and improve my gut is that its the infections. Bad infections give rise to SIBO or SIFO and eventually a leaky gut happens.

I saw a lot of videos of people who had ibs and sibo and what they did to cure themselves ...it was basically probiotics and lowfodmap diet ( and the role of vitamins like - b12 , b7 , vitamin d is also very important ) .
and avoid gluten ( it contains gliadin which creates issues ) and about probiotics i firmly believe that " garden of life - ultra primal defence " is the best probiotic for such conditions

Maybe the gastro docs's pharmaceutical medicines didnt suit you.
My friend I have tried Lacto-Bifido probiotic, it causes flare up of my symptoms. According to Justin Marchegiani, it means that my small intestine is still not SIBO/SIYO/Infection free.
I looked up the "garden of life - ultra primal defence" it is a lacto-bifido probiotic, not a soil based probiotic.
I have tried SBPs also and they caused me issues as well, although half of what lacto-bifido probiotics caused. Therefore I stopped taking lacto-bifido probiotic and Soil based probiotics both. I do take Sacchromyces boulardi, I feel good on it and its in my daily schedule.

    1. Have you seen a gastroenterologist and asked him to test you for SIBO and/or gut pathogens? Please do that first before going to super uber expensive functional medicine expert.

I havent found a good herbal antimicrobials made or easily available in india, nor I found good probiotics made or available easily in India. I bought from Justin Marchegiani and Michael Ruscio, they are superb antimicrobials, but you have to import tham from USA, which becomes 50% more expensive because of the custom duties.

  41. My gut issues started after using several rounds of antibiotics for my recurrent skin infection.
I had chronic gastroenteritis but not severe (while using proton pump inhibitors). Then i was treated with rifaximin, diarrhea stopped but my current issues of ibs constipation type and dyspepsia surfaced
I have been consulting multiple good gastroenterologists (citizens hospital, yashoda hospitals) since jan 2019. But they never asked me to test for sibo may be because they already treated me with rifaximin or they dont have facility to test for sibo .

  42. I used herbal antimicrobials along with Paleo diet and my skin improved. Skin issues = gut pathogens.

Thank you for sharing your experience with a gastroenterologist. I have read several times at various places that just rifaximin wont do, if we arw going the allopathic route. Along with rifaximin for SiBO, we need fluconazol for fungus and flagyl for protozoa. These allopathic medicines damage youf gut flora a lot at the same time. That is why herbal antimicrobials which are more gentle on the good gut microbiome and very lethal on the gut pathogens, are much better alternative than allopathic antimicrobials.

Try Dr Pankaj Bharti 's holistic wellness. He has made some yputube videos which I can bottomline as "colon inflammation(doesnt explicitly say gut pathogens though, like western functional docs) is the root cause of all diseases. Try him as a low budget alternative and if heavy cost of herbal antimicrobials + 50% import duty doesnt bother you, then go for imported herbal antimicrobials.

I would suggest reading micheal ruscio's healthy gut, healthy you book.

Thank you for sharing your work.

  45. Hi, I am consulting functional medicine doctor Dr Prashant Wadhaawan from Mumbai India for my issues manifest like mast cell activation but ibs as tagged by many doctors i met like gastroenterologist, ayurveda, homeopathy!
Dr Prashant did blood test including test like c peptide, cortisol, hpylori etc... hpylori was 0.8 and high homocysteine with many deficiencies, food intolerance tests showed few high items. He put me on HP kit, Rifaximin, vit supplements, quercetin, magnesium with No dairy, gluten and sugar diet. Mastic gum and L.rhamnosus probiotic added later... Its 20 days but not much improvement yet.. just wanted to know if im on right track and if anyone knows about him!

    1. Hey Mandy, Thank you for sharing your work.

Before we get into Prashant Wadhawan, Do you mind sharing your work treatement plan and your progress with gastroenterologist, ayurveda and homeopathy?

Prashant Wadhawan's treatment plan sounds like very basic and crude. You dont have to be a functional medicine practitioner to give H Pylori, Vit Supplements and Rifamin. Thats just A, B,C,D letters compared to William Shakespeare's novels. Seems like he threw every supplement available supplement in the market at you. I hope you bought in small quantities for testing the efficacy of those supplements and the plan first.

When I started with the plan from Justin Marchegiani or Michael Ruscio, I started to feel better from day 1 and it stayed with me for many many more months even after those herbs finished. Offcourse, Since my gut hasn't been completely fixed, some of the previous issues start to resurface.

Just read the Michael Ruscio's book and it has the best plan for resolving all chronic health issues. Doctors all around the world charge an arm and a leg for the same plan. I know because I have paid through my teeth for the plan that was easily available for 500 INR. Only problem is getting those supplements into India, they attract 50% import duty unlike any other country in the world. That humongous import duty make India a breeding ground for idiots and charlatans like Shabnam Das Kar, Lily Kiswani and Prashant Wadhwans of the world.

If Parshant Wadhawan's plan is working, you should be able to tolerate some or all of the restricted foods food very well. Which foods do you have allergies to? You need to remove those too, in addition to gluten, dairy and refined foods.

      Keep posting the updates.

This is my last hope. Will this be just a waste of my time and money or can ot really work out.

    1. Is this his website?
      https://ultrawellness.in/functional-medicine-lab-in-india/
This website contains all the tests and supplements that functional med doctors in USA suggest.

This is a jackpot for Indians if he really provides these services to Indians without facing the 50% import duty on supplements. Plus, a USA doc charges an average 300 USD or 21000 INR for an hour of consultation, surely if he lives and serves in India, he cant be charging 21000 for an hour.

Do give it a try Jarna. You could be sitting on a gold mine.

    1. What did the gastroenterlogist say?
I would go with what gasteroenterologist says until he says "there is no more we can do" or "you dont have any diseases" or "its all in your mind" or "just do yoga and be dairy, gluten, peanuts, soy free".
After he is done from his side, I would go to a functional medicine doctor ex Dr. Anish Musa in Ahmedabad. Somebody you tests your gut bacteria and infections. Thats what gasteroenterologists miss. They have never studied the role of microbiota in the gut. Maybe their curiculum is far behind the latest research or they are too busy already minting money by doing endoscopy and earning commisions from the pharmaceuticals companies. But balancing my gut microbiota is what helped me a little bit.

      Keep sharing.

  65. I have been following this thread since 2019. Thank you for some great insights, honest update and reviews.

For those of you looking for an opinion on Kalpana Shekhawat, here you go

I have had gut issues for years that have been really causing me trouble. Bloating, gas, reflux, weight issues etc. So I met Kalpana Shekhawat for the diagnosis. As a typical functional practitioner, she prescribed tests - OATS, Stool Comprehensive, Total Blood work & Hormones etc. My later research told me that some of the tests were absolutely not needed but she insisted on it. Also, she insists on getting most of them done through her. Some I understand can be done only via her but the rest also she and her team insisted to get done from her.

By now I have already spent 100,000 INR with her for just tests and consultation. Surprisingly they insist on Cash payments and not cards which I kind of found weird.

Now when the reports came in (starts the most unimpressive part)

She charges extra to just write your prescription, extra for your diet plan + cost of expensive supplements + recommends IV & Ozone therapy etc (Charges extra)

While she writes you the prescription, she does not discuss or even see you. She looks at the report and writes out the stuff. Whether it suits you or not etc is your problem not hers.

Her prescription had typical anti biotics for parasites, Betaine HCL etc which anyone who has read enough online will know. Loads of Supplements & Vitamins that are sure to screw your kidneys because I know of someone who took too many of these from her and his Kidneys were out of whack.

There was no deeper understanding of issue or any customization with the diet. She prescribed typical Candida Protocol with no carbs.
Also the prescription is for 3 months straight and they insist you to buy it all together. What if things dont work out for me after 15 days or 30 days?

Well it didnt really work out well for me as after 20 - 30 days, I did not see much difference other than may be a little placebo after spending 150000 INR. But that placebo went away soon.

When reached out later for discussion, her team said please pay and take appointment to talk to her. So my understanding from the experience is that she is in it for money which is ok till you can deliver results. In my case, ,I didnt see results.

    So my review

If you want to get tested for OATS, Stool Comprehensive and such complex tests, may be she is one option who you could pay, get tested and get some form of opinion and diagnosis

But if you are looking for a functional doctor who will want to understand your issues, has the skills and knowledge to help you and genuinely cares then you look elsewhere.

Also, I think a true Practitioner will be the one with strong understanding of all school of thought from Ayurveda, Allopathy, Homeopathy, Naturopathy + Understanding of person to be able to solve one's problem. Otherwise, you can write a AI Bot to be able to look at your test reports and just churn out supplements.

    1. Sorry to hear that. Its hard to tell about the life of a person via a single line, No, I dont want any detailed explanation of his condition either. Would suggest you to read the rest of the blog. But if you did all the allopathic tests and all the allopathic doctors then it is bound to give no result.

Can anyone please help me if you had opted for his treatment.....

    1. Hi, Who the f is Dr Prashant? Another joker claiming to be a "pseudo scientist" and "expert". ?

Functional Medicine works because it is backed by thousands of research and proof. Most treatments sold by "doctors" in India are in the name of "ayurveda", "blah blah veda" nd people just assume if its ayurveda it must be true. Ayurvedic treatments for chronic diseases failed horribly in lab testing and emperically.
